Under the provisions of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, enacted in 1971, 12 Regional Native
Corporations were established to manage settlement monies, and a total of 44 million acres of land. There is also a 13th corporation which manages the assets of non-resident Alaska Natives. As you will see
from the linked Web sites below, most of these corporations now have several subsidiary companies, as well as a wide range of investments.
Each region also has a non-profit organization which administers a wide range of educational and social programs; the amount of cooperation between the non-profit and the corporation
in each region appears to vary widely.
A third level of management exists in approximately 200 Village Corporations.
