The entrance to the road/rail tunnel to Whittier. July 3, 2004. The 2.5-mile-long Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel opened to vehicle traffic in the summer of 2000. Traffic can only go in one direction at a time, so coordinating your arrival time with the tunnel schedule can save a great deal of time.
