What makes your community special?
Our community is special for the following reasons:
- it is surrounded by very large mountains
- it has a new school
- it will be part of Nunavut on April 1st
What are the best things about your community?
The best things about our community are:
- the new school
- the people here are very nice
- it has a fast food outlet called the "Quickstop"
- it has the best teachers
What would you like to change?
We would like to change the following things:
- we would like to expand the arena and have it moved to the center of town
- we would like to expand Alookie School
- we would like to move the airstrip from the middle of town
- we would like to have an asphalt airstrip rather than the gravel one we now have
What does the community name mean?
- the name "Pangnirtung" means land of the young caribou
What is the origin of the name?
- the name was given to this place by our ancestors
What do people do for a living?
People here have the following jobs:
- craft makers, fishermen, carvers, making traditional clothing, rummage sales, teachers, Social workers, construction workers, carpenters, mechanics, printmakers, postal workers, nurses, secretarys, bus drivers, janitors, fishplant workers, delivery people
What do you do for fun?
For fun we:
- go to school
- play hockey
- watch TV
- go camping
- hang out with friends
- play outside
- go shopping
- hunt
What do you eat?
We eat a variety of foods such as:
- caribou, pizza, fish, fruits, turkey, breadsticks, Beluga whale, walrus, sandwiches, poutine, spaghetti, chicken, vegetables, seal, clams, Bowhead whale, Polar bear
Describe animals and vegetation of your community.
Some of the animals around our area are:
- caribou, ravens, polar bears, fish, seals, ptarmigan, mice, rabbit
Some of the vegetation in our area are:
- blueberries, blackberries, red berries, mushrooms, small plants, moss
In 10 years from now, what will your community look like?
Do you foresee any change in your community?
We foresee many changes in our community. Some of the changes we foresee are:
- more houses and buildings
- swimming pool
- roads to Iqaluit & Qikiqtarjuaq
- battery operated vehicles
- bridge or road to Kuulik
- hospital with emergency transportation
- more school & school transporation
- paved roads
- better transportation for the fire station
- more people
- school arena and pool
- school cafeteria and daycare
- sightseeing trail to Mount Duval with an escalator
- more jobs
