While in Vernon on one of his trips he met a man by the name of Mr. Shultz who wanted a heavy team of horses for bush work in the northern part of the province. Tom bought a team of horses and delivered them by boat to Atlin, B.C. in February 1917. To get there he went to Comox, then Prince Rupert, Skagway, Whitehorse and down the river to Atlin Lake where he delivered the team to Mr. Schultz. Mr. Schultz was so impressed with Tom's knowledge of horsemanship that he offered him a job driving this team, hauling cord wood across Atlin Lake. Tom Christien lost his life on this job. Coming down a hill with a heavy load, the sleigh hit a stump, breaking a cinch on the load. This caused the logs to move forward, knocking Tom down. A man hauling a load behind Tom, found him unconscious on the road. His neck was broken. The body was taken across the lake into Atlin. He was buried there January 28th, 1918.
