First Day Covers from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Series, 1977
Queen Elizabeth II 1977 Silver Jubilee postage stamps
Discovered on Ascension Day, 1501, the small, volcanic island of Ascension has, since 1922, been a dependency of the relatively nearby colony of St. Helena. Remotely located in the South Atlantic Ocean, Ascension Island is the site of Britain's first satellite communications relay station. Little vegetation exists there, save for a few acres atop Green Mountain.
First Day Covers saluting the Silver Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II were postmarked in Georgetown, the principal settlement of Ascension Island, on February 7, 1977.
