First Day Covers from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Series, 1977
Queen Elizabeth II 1977 Silver Jubilee postage stamps
Discovered in 1502 by the Portuguese, St. Helena caps a submerged volcanic peak which rises sharply from a 2½-mile depth. Springs gushing from St. Helena's mountainsides give unlimited fresh water, a boon to the sailing ships that passed this way on their voyages around the Cape of Good Hope. The island is 2,000 miles from Cape Town, South Africa, and an equal distance from South America. Ascension Island, its dependency since 1922, lies 800 miles to the northwest. This British island is famous because Napolean Bonaparte was exiled there from 1615 until his death in 1821.
This First Day Cover honouring the Queen's Silver Jubilee was issued by St. Helena on February 7, 1977.
