St. Vincent is an island of the Windward group in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. It is a self-governing state and associated state of the United Kingdom. Soufriere, a 4,048-foot volcano, is a reminder of the island's origin. Possibly discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498, the island did not know Europeans until the seventeenth century. Then followed a long contest between the British and the French for its possession. St. Vincent's economy is based on agriculture, with arrowroot, sugarcane, and bananas the leading exports.
St. Vincent honoured the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II by releasing this First Day Cover in Kingstown, its capital and chief port, on February 7, 1977. That day was the exact twenty-fifth anniversary of Elizabeth's arrival in London, with her Commonwealth tour cut short by news of her father's death.
