The most famous and certainly the most photographed city sign in Alaska is the one proclaiming Ketchikan as "Alaska's 1st City" and "The Salmon Capital of the World." The Ketchikan Post Office was established in 1892, but it's called the 1st City because it's the first Alaskan city you see as you cruise north. The first salmon cannery opened in 1886, and by 1912 there were 5 salmon canneries located here.
