First Day Covers from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Series, 1977
Queen Elizabeth II 1977 Silver Jubilee postage stamps
Discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus, the island of Montserrat was named for a Spanish mountain upon which is found a famous monastery. Montserrat became a British possession in 1783 after brief periods of French control. It remained a member of the West Indies Federation until 1962 at which time that institution was dissolved. Differing from the other members, which became self-governing, Montserrat chose to remain a Crown Colony.
The First Day Cover from Montserrat was postmarked on February 7, 1977, the precise twenty-fifth anniversary of Elizabeth's return to London after having learned of her father's death.
