First Day Covers from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Series, 1977
Queen Elizabeth II 1977 Silver Jubilee postage stamps
Tonga is the only surviving independent kingdom in the South Pacific. The more than 150 islands constitute three main groups: Tongatabu in the south, Vavau in the north, and Haapai in the center. Most of the islands are volcanic, with active craters, but several are coral atolls. The native Polynesians grow subsistence crops and export copra and bananas. Dutch navigators discovered the northern islands in 1616 and the remainder of the group in 1643. Captain James Cook visited the islands in 1773 and 1777 and named them the Friendly Islands.
This First Day Cover honouring the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II was issued on February 6, 1977, in Nukualofa, the capital of Tonga.
