The United Slates Congress officially opened in Washington on Monday last. Congressman Warren G. Magnuson predicted definite action on the matter of the Alaska highway at the present session and states that the state department has been asked to negotiate with Canadian authorities for an agreement to build the road.
The estimated cost of building the Canadian section is given as $15,500,000 whilst that of the U. S. section is given as $2,500,000, The highway, if
constructed, would extend from the end of the present highway at Hazelton, through the Yukon Territory into Alaska.
Whilst it is stated that the proposed building of the highway has been endorsed hy the B. C. government in principle it is pointed out that in many quarters the opinion is held that such an undertaking properly belongs to the Federal government.
