In 1996, three pieces of artwork by Jessalyn Hetman, a 5th grade student at University Park Elementary, were
selected by the US Postal Service to adorn its First Day of Issue covers for its new Christmas stamps. The artwork also appeared on nationally distributed Christmas stamp booklet covers.
The First Day of Issue ceremonies were held on October 8, 1996, in North Pole, Alaska. The event was attended by many dignitaries, including Senator Ted Stevens.
Jessalyn has been drawing ever since she could pick up a crayon. Her artwork is well-known around Fairbanks, having been featured and sold at many bazaars and art shows.
