Saturday evening at 8:30 o'clock Mrs. Elizabeth Anne Wood, wife of Archibald Wood, while walking along the government road at the foot of the bluff just west of town, was attacked by valvular heart trouble, from which she had long been a sufferer, and before medica] aid could be obtained, had passed to the Great Beyond. Within twenty minutes after the seizure, when an examination was made by Dr. Clarke, life was found to have departed. At the time of her death Mrs. Wood was 43 years of age. Her husband and 18
year old son, Neville, survive her, the latter now being in school in Vancouver.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. Swanson, at Christ Church, on
Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. A large assemblage listened to the impressive utterances of the reverend speaker both in the sacred edifice and afterward at the cemetery, where the
last rites were observed.
The casket was covered with a profusion of beautiful flowers, placed by
the hands of loving and sympathetic friends.
Mrs. Wood was born in Somersetshire, England, and after her marriage came with her husband to Vancouver, in which city they were living at the time of the discovery of gold in the Klondike. In the spring of 1898 Mr. Wood, leaving his family in Vancouver,
set out for the gold country via the Stikine river route. On the way in from Ashcroft, over the Teslin lake trail, he heard of the discovery of gold in the Atlin country, and branching off from the road to the interior camp was one of the first to reach and locate in the region that has since become famed not only for the golden dust that has poured in a steady stream from its auriferous gravels but for the scenic magnificence of the surrounding country. Later he sent for his family. They remained in Atlin until the spring of 1904, when they came to Whitehorse, where they have since lived, and where Mr. Wood has been engaged in the customs brokerage business as well as filling the position of territorial agent.
Mrs. Wood was an affectionate and devoted wife and loving mother. To the bereft husband and son we tender our sincerest sympathies.
