Northern Cemeteries and Graves
A Guide to Skagway, Alaska
The Pioneer Cemetery at Skagway, Alaska
by Murray Lundberg
This cemetery, located in the forest to the northwest of the junction of the South Klondike Highway and the Dyea Road at the north end of Skagway, was opened in 1908. Prior to that, burials took place at what is now called the Gold Rush Cemetery. The last burial at the Pioneer Cemetery was in 1989, but the new Skagway Cemetery, further up the Dyea Road, was opened in 1971 and the first burial took place in August that year. A partial record of burials at the Pioneer Cemetery (207 of them) can be read here - the list ends in the middle of the "M" surnames. FindaGrave currently lists 253 burials. In October 2017, I got a list of burials with known gravesites from the City. By combining it with the list of 207 linked above, which includes burials for which the gravesite is not known, we have come up with 306, which are listed below. I feel that the actual number of burials is near 400.
We have posted a hi-resolution (3.5 MB) map of the Pioneer Cemetery that was obtained from the City, and each of the entries below has a gravesite location that ties into it. We have also created a list of burials sorted by gravesite number.
The following list includes all 305 burials that we have found records for - the names with links are the gravesites which have been photographed so far.

Gertrude M. Beitinger
Sept. 11, 1906 - Dec. 3, 1967
Mother
A broad view of the grave can be seen here.
Obituary from the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner of January 23, 1968:
"Mrs. Gertrude Beitinger of Skagway passed away suddenly of a heart attack the evening of Dec. 3, while sitting in the Sourdough Cafe having a cup of coffee. She seemed in good health and spirits earlier in the evening while having dinner with her daughter and family.
Mrs. Beitinger is one of our older Skagway residents, born in Skagway on Sept. 11, 1906, the daughter of pioneer WP&YR Dispatcher, W.J. Mulvihill. She had lived in Skagway all of her life, was married here 43 years ago to William Beitinger and their five children were also born and received their schooling in Skagway.
Gertrude was a very active citizen - she has been a member of the Library Board for many, many years, most recently serving as chairman, was a charter member of Emblem Club, and Eagle's Auxiliary. She served as Secretary of the Women's Bowling Association for many years also. Since her husband's retirement from the WP&YR she has helped him manage the Sourdough Newstand. There is hardly any area of our community life where she will not be sorely missed.
Mrs. Beitinger is survived by her husband, William Beitinger, sons Donald, of Anchorage, Alaska; C.P.O. Gordon Beitinger on active duty with the U.S. Navy and recently at Imperial Beach, Calif., after returning from a tour of duty in the Far East; Jim Beitinger of Redmond, Washington; daughters Beverly Feero and Barbara Fairbanks, both of Skagway; brothers Harold F. Mulvihill of Skagway and Roy Mulvihill of Seattle; and sister Mrs. Verna Smith of Wenatchee, Washington; and 14 grandchildren.
The funeral has been tentatively set for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, in the First Presbyterian Church of Skagway. The family has requested no flowers, preferring the money to be given to charities, especially Mrs. Beitinger's favorite."

Charles Black
Born in Glasgow
Died Feb. 27, 1913
Aged 28 years
Erected By his Friends of the C.P.R. Coast SS Co.
There is some confusion about this grave - the cemetery database states that Charles James Black, born in March 1889 in Campbell, Petersborough, Ontario, died on a Princess ship on October 18, 1918, and FindaGrave expands that to state that he drowned in the wreck of the C.P.R. steamship Princess Sophia, though she sunk on October 25, 1918.

Camillo "McGee" Brena
1920-1968
A living legend in his own time
McGee was born on August 13, 1920. You can read the story of how he acquired the nickname "McGee" here.
A broad view of the grave can be seen here.
The Pack Train Inn, erected in 1908 by Skagway's mayor, was one of Skagway's most visible and best-known properties. Since 1950, the tavern had been operated by the Brena family. But Camillo "McGee" Brena, the tavern's operator and "a living legend in his own time," according to the local press, had died in 1968. Five years later, when the park's master plan was being prepared, owner Sheila Brena (McGee's widow) had indicated an interest in selling the property to the National Park Service. More of that story can be read here.
